BookShark’s History of Science curriculum offers an in-depth journey through the development of scientific thought, exploring how science and history intersect. From ancient Sumerian calendars to the cutting-edge field of quantum physics, this comprehensive homeschool curriculum takes students on a captivating exploration of the great minds who have shaped our understanding of the world.
Key Themes in the History of Science Curriculum
This homeschool curriculum covers thousands of years of scientific history, focusing on the triumphs (and failures!) of renowned scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers. Key topics include:
- The development of early calendars in ancient Sumer and their role in the scientific advancements of the time.
- The influence of the ancient Greek city of Alexandria, where figures like Aristotle, Archimedes, and Euclid made groundbreaking contributions to science and philosophy.
- The Renaissance, where the integration of Chinese knowledge helped ignite scientific advancements in Europe, leading to major contributions from Galileo, Newton, Kepler, and Descartes.
- The explosive growth of science in the last 100 years, featuring figures like Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and the role of computers in modern scientific discoveries.
Comprehensive Literature-Based Learning
The curriculum is centered around Joy Hakim’s The Story of Science, a three-book series that dives into the lives and work of history’s most influential scientists: Aristotle, Newton, and Einstein. These books provide both historical context and scientific explanations, helping students understand how these figures revolutionized our understanding of matter, mechanics, mathematics, and the universe.
The history of science curriculum is complemented by a collection of historical literature that explores the environments and events surrounding key scientific eras. Featured books include:
- String, Straight-Edge & Shadow – An illustrated exploration of the discovery of geometry.
- Archimedes and the Door of Science – A deep dive into Archimedes’ influence and inventions.
- Bomb – A recounting of the race between Germany and the United States to develop the world’s most powerful weapon.

Is BookShark's History of Science a History or Science program?
The History of Science can be used as both! The program studies scientific advancement chronologically, covering much of world history from ancient Sumerians to modern times. The science concepts are covered in great detail, with heavy emphasis on physics and chemistry. It provides an excellent platform for young students to develop an application based understanding of chemistry, physics and advanced math.
Does the literature integrate with the History reading?
With the highly academic nature of the History program, we chose to surround it with classical literature and daily poetry reading. There is historical literature that ties to the History, but the Language Arts literature does not.
Is this a High School level program?
Yes, it can be used as a High School program! The History and Literature is designed for ages 13-15 and can be used as an eighth grade to High School level program.
Can I use this package with both my children?
Yes, you can! Your students will be able to share most of the resources in the package including the Timeline Book.
Not sure if this is the right fit? Please review the options below to find a package that will work for both of your children:
- Ages 10-13 | Level F All-Subject Package
- Ages 11-13 | Level G All-Subject Package
- Ages 12-14 | Level H All-Subject Package
- Ages 14-16 | American History & Literature I
If there is more than a three year age difference between your children, we recommend that you purchase a separate package for each student.
What are the “Required Resources” and why are they required?
The Required Resources includes a big binder with 36 week tabs for your Instructor’s Guides, The Timeline Book, a reusable Markable Map, and a set of wet-erase markers. These resources will be reused in almost every level of our History program and can be shared by multiple students. You will be given the option to purchase these items every time you buy an All-Subject or Reading with History Package, but you only need to buy it once.

The decision to homeschool our daughter, Alexa, was an easy one. Choosing a curriculum that worked well with her goals and schedule was a little more difficult.
