Are you looking for a comprehensive history and literature curriculum for your homeschool? Look no further! BookShark's History of Science & Literature offers an in-depth study that combines history with the remarkable advancements of science throughout the ages. Students will explore the contributions of history’s greatest scientific minds while developing strong skills in both history and literature.
Explore the History of Science
BookShark’s History of Science curriculum provides a fascinating exploration of how science and history intersect over thousands of years. Students will study the triumphs (and failures!) of the scientists, philosophers, and mathematicians who have shaped our understanding of the world. This engaging curriculum covers everything from the development of the ancient Sumerian calendars to modern advancements in quantum physics.
Students will:
- Explore the ancient Greek city of Alexandria and learn how Alexander the Great’s investment in scientific advancements led to the rise of legendary figures like Aristotle, Archimedes, and Euclid.
- Understand how Europe’s escape from the Middle Ages and its embrace of Chinese innovations helped ignite the Renaissance, fostering groundbreaking discoveries by Galileo, Newton, Kepler, and Descartes.
- Witness the explosive growth of science in the past century, with trailblazers like Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and the rise of computer technology advancing science in space, medicine, and beyond.
Virtual Learning Platform
BookShark also offers an optional virtual platform to complement the curriculum. This online tool gives students access to reading schedules, assessments, and instant auto-grading results. Parents can track and review their child's progress, customize assessments, and even communicate directly with their students. The virtual platform ensures a seamless homeschooling experience, accessible on both computers and mobile devices.
For purchases made in April, May, or June, Virtual access begins as early as July 1st. You can begin the course anytime within 6 months of your purchase date, and you will have 12 months from the start date to complete the course.
Homeschool History of Science Curriculum Overview
This one-year history of science curriculum offers an excellent foundation for students to understand the significance and implications of key scientific concepts, including chemistry, physics, and advanced mathematics. It’s a perfect choice for your homeschool program, providing a well-rounded education in both history and literature.
Instructor’s Guide
The included Instructor’s Guide offers a 36-week, 4-day schedule designed to allow flexibility for co-ops, music lessons, sports, field trips, or other extracurricular activities. The guide includes colorful map answer keys, discussion questions, answers, and background notes to help you make the most of your homeschooling experience.
History and Geography
Our program utilizes The Story of Science by Joy Hakim as the core of our history and geography lessons. This three-book series focuses on three of the world’s most influential scientists: Aristotle, Newton, and Einstein. Each book combines historical perspectives with scientific explanations, allowing students to explore how each scientist contributed to our current understanding of matter, mechanics, and the universe.
To enhance the historical context, we complement this series with a selection of historical literature, including:
- String, Straight-Edge & Shadow – A fascinating exploration of the discovery of geometry.
- Archimedes and the Door of Science – An in-depth look at Archimedes' groundbreaking contributions and inventions.
- Bomb – A gripping account of the race between Germany and the United States to develop nuclear weapons during World War II.
Literature and Language Arts
This is the first year in which BookShark students no longer engage in Read Alouds with their parents, and the first year (since Level D) where Language Arts and Literature are not tied directly to the History curriculum. Given the academic depth of the History program, we have complemented it with classical literature and daily poetry readings.
The Language Arts program focuses on creative expression and vocabulary development, teaching students how to write a variety of compositions, including:
- Narrative
- Argumentative
- Expository
- Persuasive
- Descriptive
Additionally, students will complete a 4-week research project and various reporting assignments similar to periodicals. Each writing assignment concludes with evaluation questions for parents to assess the quality of their child’s work.
